Privacy Policy
Settlr is a tracking-only app. It helps you record and split shared expenses with friends and groups. Settlr does not move, hold, or process money — all payments and settlements happen directly between you and the people you owe, outside the app.
This Privacy Policy explains what information Settlr ("Settlr", "we", "us", "our") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. Settlr is operated by an independent developer based in India. By using Settlr, you agree to this policy and to our Terms of Service.
1. Information we collect
Account information
- Email address and name — provided when you sign up with email and password, or shared by Google when you sign in with Google. Your email is how friends find and connect with you.
- User ID (handle) — a unique, shareable ID we generate for your account so friends can add you without exchanging personal contact details.
- Profile photo (optional) — if you upload one.
Content you create
- Groups, expenses, settlements, splits, notes, and comments that you enter to track who owes whom and to discuss shared expenses.
- Contacts you add — the names of people you choose to add so you can split expenses with them. Settlr does not access or upload your device's address book.
Feedback
- If you send feedback from within the app, we collect your message and a screenshot of the current screen (which you trigger), so we can understand and fix the issue. Screenshots may contain information visible on that screen at the time.
- We also record your browser user-agent string (the browser and operating system version your app is running on) with the feedback, so we can reproduce the problem on the right platform.
Information collected automatically
- Basic technical data needed to operate the service (for example, authentication tokens to keep you signed in). Settlr does not use advertising identifiers or third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
Push notifications
- If — and only if — you turn notifications on and allow them when your device asks, your browser gives Settlr a push subscription: a unique web address supplied by your browser vendor's push service (Google, Mozilla or Apple, depending on your browser) together with two encryption keys. We store it against your account so we can send you a notification when something happens in a group you are part of.
- That subscription is specific to one browser on one device, so it is a device identifier under Google Play's definition and we declare it as one. We use it for one purpose — delivering the notifications you asked for. It is never used for advertising, analytics, profiling or tracking you across apps or websites, and it is never shared with anyone other than the push service that has to deliver the message.
- Notification content is deliberately vague. A notification tells you that something happened and in which group — for example “New expense in <your group's name>. Tap to see the details.” It never contains an amount or another person's name, so nothing sensitive appears on your lock screen.
- You can turn it off at any time, in Settings inside the app or in your browser's or phone's own settings. When you turn it off, or when you log out, or when your browser's push service tells us the subscription is no longer valid, we delete the stored subscription. Deleting your account deletes it too.
What we do not collect
- No phone number. Settlr never asks you for a phone number — yours or anyone else's — and there is nowhere in the app to enter one. We do not collect phone numbers.
- No financial details. Settlr stores no card, bank account, UPI ID, or other payment details, and never processes a payment. Expense amounts are your own informal records.
- No device address book, and no location. Settlr does not ask for contacts or location permission.
- No advertising ID, and no tracking across apps or websites. The push subscription described above identifies a browser so a notification can reach it, and nothing else. If you never turn notifications on, it is never created.
2. How we use your information
- To provide the core service — creating your account, storing your expenses and balances, and syncing them across your devices.
- To let you connect with friends and split expenses with them.
- To respond to feedback and support requests.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
3. How your information is shared
Your data is only shared in these limited ways:
- With people you choose — when you add someone to a shared expense or group, the relevant expense and balance details are visible to that connection.
- With service providers who help us run Settlr:
- Supabase — database hosting and authentication (stores your account and app data).
- Google — "Sign in with Google" authentication, if you choose it.
- Cloudflare — web hosting and content delivery.
- Resend — used only to email your in-app feedback to our support inbox.
- Your browser vendor's push service (Google, Mozilla or Apple, depending on your browser) — only if you turn notifications on. It carries the notification to your device. The message body is encrypted so that only your browser can read it.
These providers process data only to provide their service to us. We may also disclose information if required by law.
4. Data storage and security
Your data is stored on our service providers' servers. We use industry-standard measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and database access rules that restrict each account's data to its owner and authorized connections. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
5. Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your data at any time:
- In the app — open Settings → Delete Account to remove your account and associated data.
- By email — write to us at the address below and we will delete your account and personal data.
Some records may be retained for a short period where required for legal, security, or backup purposes, after which they are deleted.
6. Age requirement
Settlr is intended for people aged 18 and over. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
7. Your rights
You may access, correct, or delete your personal information, and request that we stop processing it. To exercise these rights, use the in-app controls or contact us.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will be communicated within the app.
